CAN A MINISTER PREACH A GOD IS GOOD SERMON TO THE POOR AS HE WOULD IN HOLLYWOOD
The Civil Writer Magazine
To say that God is good means that God always acts in accordance to what is right, true, and good but what about economics. How does God's goodness extend socially, economically and equally to believers in Compton, California, on an Indian reservation in South Dakota as it does to believers in Hollywood and Beverly Hills, California if it is about economics. Is God's goodness judged from the standpoint of where you are and what you have?
A collection of cocoa-colored buildings in Compton at the corner of Laurel Street and Wilmington Avenue, is home to about 1,000 people, most of them women and children on public assistance. At least seven of the 163 units are boarded up. Grass around the complex is dried and dying. Mattresses and other trash are strewn about. Is God good.
Living conditions on Native American reservations are worst. They resemble that of third world conditions or more recently referred to as a fourth world. Beverly Hills on the other-hand have mansions, lavish hotels and stretch limousines. Look around Beverly Hills, an international symbol of the ultimate in luxury.
If God is good, how can the same message be preached with consistency. Not all is equal under the term "God is good". I saw a small church in a shantytown in South Africa in a neighborhood of rats, roaches, sewage filth, communal outhouses and running water from a communal faucet in the village. To preach God is good in that small church is hard to justify from an economical standpoint.
Do we have to use the label "God is good" when Christians are not living equal. To make the term God is good fitting, it needs to be denominated just to having life but not living.
