Ghana-born Nancy Abu-Bonsrah made history last week, becoming the first black female to be accepted for a residency at the prestigious Johns Hopkins medical school. The first African-American neurosurgeon trained in the United States, E. Latunde Odeku, have largely remained in obscurity. Born on June 29, 1927 in Lagos, Nigeria, Dr. Odeku received his M.D. from the Howard University College of Medicine in 1954. Stanford University in California just announced the promotion of neurosurgeon Dr Odette Harris to Professor of Neurosurgery, making her the first African-American female Professor of Neurosurgery in the United States.
