LET ME PUT SOME RESPECK ON IT

I was indulging in recalling the past 50+ years back to the 1960s when Sam Cooke, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, Chaney, Goodman, and Schwerner, Elijah Muhammad, Adam Clayton Powell, Thurgood Marshall, Nina Simone, Barbara Jordan, Shirley Chisholm, Fannie lou Hamer and others were living. Many like myself that were born around 1960 were mentally aware of, as the late great Marvin Gaye song would say, "What's going on". Although we could not consciously make out the ramifications we capture many of those events at the time like a Polaroid picture stamped on our minds.

Many of you have grandchildren now and have stories of the past to disseminate to those young ears. You are now the Grios, the storytellers to replace the Jim Crow grandparents of the era before.

The same winds of turmoil you breath not knowing if it past a cross burning or a church bombing, whether it was the same winds blowing past a hanging body or swinging Montgomery Alabama nightstick you live through it and you [sic] aughta tell it.

The old-folks of the 1920s-40s are dying off and you are the next generation of old folks. Let me put some respeck on it, you are it. You now know somethings to share about the past. It's your time to come up to the plate to bat. It is your time to tell the stories like a Grio that you lived through and not let the fables of history be bastardized in school books and silenced in church. You are the parents and grandparents now so don't get hung-up on this blackface spectacle but tell your children and grandchildren about once upon a time when they marched and died.....
