NOT EVERYTHING BLACK AND RED IS BLACKFACE

NOT EVERYTHING BLACK AND RED IS BLACKFACE

Blackface is a form of theatrical make-up used predominantly by non-black performers to represent a caricature of a black person. The practice gained popularity during the 19th century and contributed to the spread of racial stereotypes such as the "happy-go-lucky darky on the plantation" or the "dandified coon".

So, what is an indication of Blackface? Well let's cut through the crap before everything Black with red lips become blackface. First blackface can only exist above the neck as a caricature by paint or a mask otherwise it must be a photo or a print on clothing. The Gucci sweater is a blackface pattern because it is above the neck but a belt and shoes cannot be blackface unless they have a photo or print of blackface.

Lips are defined with a red color for a reason. The act of applying red lipstick is empowering. By dressing your lips in red, it draws people's attention to you, especially your mouth, and subsequently, the words that come out of it. 'It's a symbol of prowess.

Besides Black people are not known for red lips but ashy white lips.
