THE DIRECTIONS NORTH AND SOUTH HAD RACIAL INTENT
The Civil Writer Magazine
The concept of a gap between the Global North and the Global South in terms of development and wealth. In the 1980s, the Brandt Line was developed as a way of showing the how the world was geographically split into relatively richer and poorer nations, whites and minorities. A new study was written by a team of psychologists led by Brian Meier of Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania. They began their research by showing in a simple pencil-and-paper test of 99 individuals that respondents are more likely to rate the word “north” as more positive than the word “south.” Most early maps, before the wide-spread use of the compass, placed east at the top. This is generally thought to be due to the fact that the sun rises in the east.
Hundreds of years before the compass Caucasians predominantly occupied an area that seems to be on top of the world metaphorically speaking for affect and perception (up = good, down = bad) and therefore (north = up, south = down)”. Any land at the new north was considered good being it was the domicile of Caucasians and anything south was considered bad and minorities. This theory appeared in the minds of early settlers of North America who originally created maps with a west-east orientation that resulted from the direction that they primarily traveled and explored. When slavery evolved and a war broke out it established a good north and bad south.
In modern times the division of the world involves a blandt line that states wealth is to the north with white countries and minerals and resources to the poor south with minorities.
The relevance of Brandt line in modern context is no longer valid in modern day context as some of the world's strongest economies in (India, China and Singapore) lie below the Brandt line, in the areas dubbed as the 'Poor South'. Today the terms north and South in America has reflected on Black and white, rich and poor. It all involved from the south indicating the domicile of minorities and north indicating the domicile of whites even in the world. In the US many major cities are divided by a racial line of whites to the north and Blacks and minorities to the south. Only recently in the last 50 years minorities in the US and the world have been able to spread.
